Everyman Theatre Cardiff is Cardiff’s liveliest and most adventurous theatre company, founded in 1942.

It started life as the Unity Theatre Group, focusing on mainly political theatre, but later broke away and embarked on its own policy of presenting experimental live theatre in as professional and interesting a manner as possible.

In the 1970s Everyman was instrumental in the opening of Chapter Arts Centre in Cardiff. This, together with the advent of the Sherman Theatre, brought a new era for Everyman. Here was a professional venue with all the technical facilities we longed for. For the last few years, we have concentrated our productions within the home base of Chapter where we also have our own rehearsal and Clubnight premises.

The 1990s witnessed Everyman’s 50th anniversary year in 1992 and two European tours. The Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival, established in the 1980’s moved from Dyffryn House to the Museum of Welsh Life at St Fagan’s, and has grown from strength to strength. The Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival, Wales’ largest outdoor theatrical event, has been based in Cardiff’s city centre at Sophia Gardens since 2013, and provides an eclectic range of first class theatre, in the open air!

In 2021, the Festival went on on tour for the first time presenting a programme of shows at both Insole Court, Cardiff and Tredegar House, Newport.

This year, we returned to Sophia Gardens to present a full Cardiff Open Air Theatre Festival for 2024.
