Russia, 1904: Lopakhin, an up-and-coming businessman wants to sell the cherry orchard and develop the land for holiday cottages. Mme Ranevsky, owner of the house, orchard and estates, wants things to stay as they are, not realising the precarious position she is in. And Trofimov, the revolutionary student, sees a different path for Russia entirely.

The Cherry Orchard, Chekhov’s last and greatest play, deals with the hope, despair and change that was present in the years preceding the Russian Revolution. It is here performed in Trevor Griffiths’ vibrant and sharp 1977 version for Nottingham Playhouse which banished the English ‘drawing room drama’ approach to Chekhov for something altogether more powerful and meaningful.

Tickets: £12, £10 concessions
