Clubnight: Beginnings with Richard Jones

Wed 4th Mar 2026, 7:30pm

What is the best way to start a play? A hard hitting monologue? Some humour? Something obscure or revealing or perhaps just a low key piece of dialogue to gently introduce the audience. How early on will the audience be engaged? Of course, all plays will differ in the way they begin, depending on what its about, so please bring along the opening scene (5 mins maximum) of any play and be prepared to rehearse and perform it in the clubnight. Following its performance, without actually saying what the play is about, have a short discussion as follows

  1. Was anything revealed as to what the play might be about?
  2. Was there anything to engage the audience at an early stage, such as comedy, something obscure, an interesting character or something revealing?

A selection of opening scenes from some plays will also be available on the night.
