Julius Caesar

“IT MUST BE BY HIS DEATH”

The personal and the political violently collide in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, the ultimate story of betrayal, murderous conspiracy and the corruption of good intentions. It is set in Rome in the first century BCE, but it could be anywhere at any time, and every age sees its own reflection in its tragedy.
Caesar is on the verge of seizing absolute power and making himself king. Opposed to him is a deadly combination of political guile and personal malice in Cassius, and self-deceiving idealism and tortured nobility, represented by Brutus. Add to the mix a volatile mob, ripe for insurgency and violence, and a skilled and charismatic rabble-rouser called Mark Antony, and the result is not ‘Liberty, Freedom and Death to Tyranny’ as promised, but an orgy of vengeful killing, bitter recrimination between friends, the chaos of civil war and multiple suicides.
A powerful and contemporary new production of this tragedy of unintended consequences.
