On-line Clubnight: Adapting Short Stories – The Yellow Wallpaper
Wednesday 14 April 8pm
This Clubnight will focus on a short story – ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ – written by the feminist American writer, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, in the 1890s.
I only came across the story earlier in the year and it is one of the most powerful monologues I have encountered. Ever since I’ve been thinking about what a brilliant adaptation it could make, how it could be done, how demanding it could be for the characters etc.
You can find the story at https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/theliteratureofprescription/exhibitionAssets/digitalDocs/The-Yellow-Wall-Paper.pdf – check it out and bring it along. There have been film adaptations – a new one out recently.
Lots to think about, find some extracts you like and let yourself go. It is quite Gothic but also makes you think about the effect of lock down we’ve been experiencing.
I look forward to seeing you.
